Baric Tablets
Baric Tablets are a Montessori sensorial material designed to introduce and refine a child's tactile sense, specifically their ability to discriminate weight—a concept known as the "baric sense." This material helps children develop fine motor skills, concentration, and an appreciation for the physical properties of objects.
While blindfolded, the child endeavours to discern the weight of the tablets. Error is controlled by the colour of the wooden tablets, the lightest colour being the lightest weight to the darkest colour being the heaviest weight. The tablets are arranged from lightest to heaviest, allowing children to explore and compare their weights.
Purpose:
- To develop the child's baric sense, enabling them to explore and understand objects through their weight.
- To lay the foundation for further sensory exploration and learning.
- To encourage concentration, observation, and fine motor skills.
The set consists of one box with three compartments containing ten each of light, medium and heavy weight tablets. Each tablet is 8 x 6 cm.
