Exploring Upper and Lower Case Letters
Learning to recognise and write letters before starting school is foundational for a child’s early literacy development. It sets the stage for reading, writing, and overall academic success. Letter recognition helps children understand that written language is made up of individual symbols (letters) that represent sounds. This is the first step toward phonemic awareness—the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words—which is essential for learning to read. Knowing letters and their corresponding sounds allows children to begin decoding words (sounding them out), a key skill for early reading. Familiarity with letters makes books and print-rich environments more approachable and less intimidating.
Learning to form letters correctly helps children express their thoughts in writing, even before they can spell full words. Writing letters builds fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, both of which are critical for future academic tasks. Children who enter school knowing letters feel more competent and confident during early literacy activities. This confidence can lead to a more positive attitude toward school and learning overall.
