Woven objects are among the most functional material items in everyday Aboriginal culture. Aboriginal people began using woven fish traps between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity in adapting to their environments. These traps were crafted from natural materials like reeds and pandanus, showcasing a deep understanding of local ecosystems and sustainable practices. The design and construction of these traps were not only practical but also embedded with cultural significance, reflecting the interconnectedness of Aboriginal peoples with their land and traditions.
